Background of the Study
Community-based mental health programs are essential for addressing the growing burden of mental illnesses in underserved regions. Such programs prioritize early detection, treatment, and rehabilitation of individuals within their communities, ensuring accessibility and sustainability (WHO, 2023). Nurses play a vital role in these programs, engaging in outreach, patient education, and support for individuals with mental health conditions.
In Katsina State, the prevalence of mental health disorders has been rising due to socio-economic challenges and inadequate mental health services. Despite the potential impact of nurses’ involvement in community-based programs, their roles remain underutilized due to limited resources, training, and systemic challenges (Garba & Umar, 2023). This study evaluates the extent and effectiveness of nurses’ involvement in these programs in Katsina State.
Statement of the Problem
Mental health services in Nigeria are primarily facility-based, leaving a significant portion of the population without access to care. In Katsina State, community-based mental health programs have been initiated to bridge this gap. However, nurses’ involvement in these programs appears limited, affecting their overall impact.
A lack of research on the roles and contributions of nurses in community mental health initiatives further impedes the development of effective strategies. This study aims to address this gap by evaluating nurses’ involvement in community-based mental health programs in Katsina State.
Objectives of the Study
1. To assess the level of nurses’ participation in community-based mental health programs in Katsina State.
2. To evaluate the impact of nurses’ involvement on program outcomes.
3. To identify challenges faced by nurses in community-based mental health programs.
Research Questions
1. What is the level of nurses’ participation in community-based mental health programs in Katsina State?
2. How does nurses’ involvement influence the outcomes of these programs?
3. What challenges do nurses face in community-based mental health programs?
Research Hypotheses
1. Nurses’ participation in community-based mental health programs is significantly low in Katsina State.
2. Nurses’ involvement positively impacts the outcomes of community-based mental health programs.
3. Identified challenges negatively affect nurses’ roles in community-based mental health programs.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on nurses involved in community-based mental health programs in Katsina State, excluding facility-based services. Limitations include potential variability in program implementation and reliance on qualitative data.
